Countdown to Nothingness

I am unemployed this week. I'm not using this opportunity quite as well as I would've hoped to, but it's been pretty good overall.

On Tuesday, I had my third going away lunch from my previous company. It's kind of weird to go back into work to have lunch with former coworkers on your second day of unemployment, but it was mostly people I like, so I took it.

One guy was treating me like some kind of, um, rock star, though. I think he took about five pictures or so from different angles and had someone take a picture with me and him together. He says I inspire him to be a better programmer, which is really all that I can ask for, but I just didn't have the heart to tell him the actual value of a picture with me is far lower than he seemed to think it was.

But I start a new job on Monday. I will be nobody. My only fame will be as the new guy. I have just enough political pull to hopefully get a useful computer to work with. I plan on being behind for as long as I can. I have an industry, products, code bases, corporate culture, commute paths, and who knows what else to catch up on. I don't even know what language(s) I'm going to be using. Maybe I'll have to learn Ada or something for this job.

Whatever happens, I'll at least not have people coming to me with questions other than what my mailing address is.

Here's to nobody.
